To celebrate decades of international exchange, cooperation and coordination between Eastern and Western semiotics, the School of Foreign Languages & Cultures of Nanjing Normal University proudly presents an exciting annual program to our fellow semioticians around the world. Entitled “IASS-AIS—NNU Advanced Semiotics Workshop”, the program is under the auspices of the International Association for Semiotic Studies and features both genuinely and comprehensively semiotic topics as well as representative events in honor of world famous scholars in semiotics.
The 1st IASS-AIS—NNU Advanced Semiotics Workshop will be held on Suiyuan Campus of Nanjing Normal University from June 29 to July 2, 2018. This debut will be centered on the theme of “Theory-Practice Integration in Semiotics in the Ever-changing World”, covering various key topics of semiotics as a cross-disciplinary methodology that include but are not limited to
- signs in language and literature,
- social and cultural semiotics,
- semiotics of media,
- communication and cognition,
- and philosophy and neurosciences of signs.
Guest speakers who will be presenting keynote speeches at the workshop this year are foremost scholars in semiotic and related fields. There will also be sessions dedicated to instruction in academic writing and publishing given by invited editors of esteemed journals.
Participants who wish to present individual papers should submit their abstracts to email@example.com. All abstracts must be submitted in English. The deadline for submissions is March 5, 2018. Please include the following information in your submission:

IASS-AIS Membership and Workshop Registration Fees:
Please note that membership of the IASS is obligatory for participating in IASS-AIS World Congresses and IASS-AIS—NNU Advanced Semiotics Workshops. In addition to keeping up to date with semiotics globally and receiving communications from the President and the IASS in general, membership also offers the following specific benefits:
▪ IASS-AIS Membership (Regular) – 25 euros or 45 euros
‘Standard’ membership @ 25 euros per person = individual membership + 5 de Gruyter tokens (i.e. 150 euros in monetary value)
‘Gold’ membership @ 45 euros per person = standard individual membership + 15 de Gruyter tokens (i.e. 450 euros in monetary value)
▪ IASS-AIS Membership (Student) – 10 euros
Students are eligible for IASS-AIS Group membership @ 10 euros per person = a reduced price individual membership + 5 de Gruyter tokens
Workshop Registration Fees:
▪ Workshop Registration (Regular) – 320 euros or 2500 yuan
▪ Workshop Registration (Student) – 260 euros or 2000 yuan
For IASS-AIS members there is a reduction of 40% in the registration fee. Newly registered members at the 2018 Workshop will be eligible for registration fee reductions in future workshops. Although both RMB and euros will be acceptable, we encourage our participants to pay their membership and registration fees in euros. Payment in RMB will be subject to the currency exchange rate at the moment of registration.
Endorsed by IASS-AIS, this new flagship initiative will represent a superb opportunity to unite Asian semiotics and to shine a beacon for both Eastern and Western semioticians. We are extending warm invitations to our fellow semioticians both at home and abroad. Participants will have full access to all the talks, panels and group discussions during the workshop. At the conclusion of the workshop, each qualified full-time participant will receive an official certificate of IASS-AIS Advanced Semiotics Workshop. In order to ensure high-quality training, the workshop this year has set a limit on the number of participants and we encourage early registration via email.
