As you are probably aware, Circus Futures (UK & ROI) is one of nine partners in the pan-European project CircusNext. With Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe (FR) as main co-ordinators of the project the other core partners are La Cascade/ Maison des Arts du Clown et du Cirque (FR), Les Migrateurs (FR), Associazione Culturale IdeAgorà / Festival Mirabilia (IT), Associazione Culturale Sarabanda / Festival Circumnavigando (IT), Associacio de professionals de Circ de Catalunya [La Central del Circ] (ES), A Officina CIPRL [CCVF] (PT), Zahrada o.p.s. Between 2013 and 2017 the current CircusNext partners have been undertaking a series of activities to support emerging contemporary circus artists in Europe. The final element of this is the presentation of laureates from all previous partnership programmes, Jeunes Talents Cirque (JTC), Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe (JTCE) and CircusNext, across Europe titled the European Season of Circus Arts. This culminates in final performances presented by Circus Futures in Bristol/ UK in October 2017 in partnership with the Circus City 2017 Festival. Alongside this in the UK, with funding from Arts Council England throughout this period, Circus Futures has been delivering a number of Talent Development initiatives. CircusNext PLaTFoRM
Circus Futures is delighted to be working with the CircusNext PLaTFoRM, a new programme of artistic support which will be coordinated by Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe (JTCE). The overall programme objectives are:
- Promoting emerging artists and stimulating a truly European programming of cultural and artistic works
- Fostering the mobility and visibility of emerging creators and artists from abroad
- Stimulating a genuine Europe-wide programming of cultural and artistic activities
- Contributing to audience development and providing visibility to Europe’s values and different cultures
- Implementing a communication and branding strategy, including the development of a European quality label
This programme is supported by the European Commission through Creative Europe. Details about how to apply will be released later this year.

Circus Futures Symposium
“Supporting the Creation of Work of Quality within the Field of Circus”

Circus Futures is excited to present the next in the series of national debates about the creation of work of quality, here and abroad. Following on from previous sold-out events, this is a facilitated day of discussion, sharing of best practice, future forecasting about the impact of issues such as Brexit, catching up on European initiatives, talking about the celebrations taking place in 2018 for the anniversary of 250 years of circus, and a great place to meet new potential working partners. The event is aimed at artists, programmers, policy makers and others working at a professional level in circus. Runs 10am (registration) for a 10.30am start through to 5pm. There is an option for delegates to see CircusNext European Season of Circus Arts Shows on and around this date.

On Friday 20th October 2017 between 11am and 1pm there will be a panel debate featuring artists who have been in receipt of bespoke assistance to support their development through Circus Futures and other initiatives
On Friday 20th October 2017 between 4pm and 6pm there will be a presentation about the last four years of the CircusNext commissioning process which will also include details about the next support elements available presented within the Creative Europe Platforms programme.
Delegates are also invited to attend the invite-only performance by Squarehead Productions/ Darragh McLoughlin (IE) CircusNext 2013-2014 Laureate on Friday 20th October 2017 at 3.25pm. This event is also at Colston Hall. This show runs for 30 minutes and is suitable for ages 10 years+.
Delegates are invited to attend the ticked performance by Ilona Jäntti and Aino Venna at 7.00pm on Friday 20th October 2017 and free tickets will be provided. This event is at Bristol Old Vic. Ilona Jäntti (FL) was a CircusNext 2013-2014 Pre-selected Artist. This show runs for 60 minutes and is suitable for ages 12 years+.

Circus Futures Residencies
Circus Futures has previously offered two funded residencies for emerging companies in the UK who applied to CircusNext and/or related UK programmes.
Paul Evans was hosted by Nofit State Circus in Cardiff at their Four Elms Creation Space to work on a piece focusing on how Circus Theatre as an art form can help to redefine what it is to be human and challenge the confines of gender stereotypes.
The Bullzini Family were hosted by The Point in Eastleigh in September to further develop their piece Equilibrius.

Circus Futures UK Artists Mentoring Programme
Over 20 packages of assistance have been offered and applications from UK artists (UK born or UK based) who would like assistance from a mentor will close on 15th October 2017.

Partnership with Circus Census
As part of a PhD research process, a census of circus (traditional and contemporary) and street arts (performance) artists is being undertaken to create a mapping of professional level performers presently working in Europe. The timing is nominated to coincide with the 250th anniversary of circus. If you are a circus or street arts artist and would like to be included in the study, sign up to the census at www.censusarts.org. You will be personally invited to participate in the study. This is the first time that a census of this breadth has been undertaken. The results will be shared with everyone who participates and with others including policy makers across Europe.
Partnership with Circus Development Network
Circus Development Network is the new name for the Circus Development Agency. Set up in the 1990’s as Circus Arts Forum, the charity exists to promote and develop circus and to act as a vehicle for information exchange about circus opportunities and developments. Circus Development Network recently re-developed the website www.circusarts.org.uk
